GETTING A GOOD CMS

In the previous posts I talked about getting content for your website or blog. Now today I will talk about how to a good content management system. For those who are new to CMS, maybe I can explain what they are. These are just websites which have already been designed where one can just edit and customize them to suit their needs. They are mostly made available for free and are open source. Open source means that one is free to edit and redistribute. Examples include Wordpress, Joomla, and Drupal among many others. Now each of these CMS is designed favoring a certain activity frequently done on the web. For example Wordpress is designed to best suit people who want to get to blogging. Joomla, Drupal, pixie and cushy CMs are good for websites though they still have powerful blogging tools. There are other Content management systems made for special sites like video sites and music sites as well as social networks, online lists etc.
When choosing a CMS it is important therefore to consider the type of content you wish to share. Again it is important to consider the number of developers who use such a system. There is a difference between visitors, users and developers. If there many developers using CMS then it means they will deliver more plugins and widgets to the users. Wordpress for example has so many developers and so you can be able to see some powerful features in some of the sites created with Wordpress like magic mesh, yahoo Wordpress itself among may others. Joomla on the other hand boasts of a great number of developers and reading from their showcase site on joomla.org you realize that they have great features on their listings.
It is also important to consider the cost and support. Some CMS are very expensive to acquire and other are not even supported by any hosting service provider. This makes them inappropriate for business bloggers. One should therefore consider a CMS which has value for money. I will recommend Joomla or Wordpress. So why don’t you try one today and see how it works?
